if you need us, we will be dressing for dinner with the crawleys

Downton Abbey

we have shown such restraint.  we haven’t watched a single episode of downton abbey, season 3.  we have been patiently waiting {torture} for it to be released on DVD so that we can gluttonously indulge in back-to-back british goodness.  so, that is what we will be doing for the next few evenings.  and if you see me out and about…don’t you dare spoil the ending for me.  {biting nails}

cheerio!

elinor live

oh i just had to share this with the world.

{and by world, i mean those of you who happen to check out this blog…hi mom!  hi dad!  hi amy!  hi adele!}

would you look at these two?  how sweet are they?  would you just listen to those sweet gurgles and coos?  and look at her launch off of her papa, so strong.  and that yawn.  playtime with papa can really tucker you out!  oh, that little face.  and look at my hubby.  he is just beaming with pride and happiness and contentment.  he sure does love his little girl.  i could gush for days.

and i could share video after video.  oh wait!  and now i can.  i recently joined the super cool vine community where you can create 7 second videos and share them on a feed.  they just loop and loop!  it is like video instagram.  love it.  and it is so much fun to see how creative people can be.  me?  not so creative.  i just post video after video of little miss e.  get ready for cuteness overload!  so, if you are looking for another social media outlet, feel free to head over to your app store and pick up vine.  you can find me at “rachel whitehouse”

toodle-oo!

well hey there!

faces

woah!  that is a whole lotta our faces.  would you look at that cute little goofy pair?  soooo, i discovered that i like to snap obligatory “hubby and i are driving somewhere” pictures when we hop in the car.  and my sweet man humors me.  aaand i have way too many of these on my camera roll…so i figured that i should share some of my favs from the past year with you all on this lovely morning.  {you’re welcome}

so it is monday already.  sheesh.  could i get about six saturdays in a row please?  that would be nice.  especially a collection of saturdays like this past one.  it was oh-so-rainy here and there is nothing better.  the smell of wet desert.  the thick white clouds.  the foggy air hovering over the mountains.  the plinky-plunky sound of water drops as they touch the windows.  it was perfection.  we stayed close to home and cooked good food, rolled our eyes at mr. charles who turns into a total grumpus when it rains, watched movies, curled up in soft blankets, listened to elinor talk…and did some studying too. {well, hubby did that.  he is working on his fancy-pants financial exam a few weeks from now}

what fun things did you do this weekend?  does all this cold weather make you extra lazy homebodies too?  i must say that i enjoy it immensely.  i savor days like that…they are so rare here in the sunny desert.

mama musings {plus some bonus fun links for your weekend}

bath face

yup.  that is my daughter.  and i am partially responsible for forming that sweet little one.  for raising her up and training her.  molding her perspective.  shaping her personality.  i need to be a model for her.  i want to be an example of health and balance.  i want to surround her with truth and beauty.  i want her to be secure in her identity.  knowing that she belongs to Christ and is loved by Him. deeply feeling a sense of safety and belonging in our family.  that home is a place where she has the freedom to explore and learn and develop – and to be her authentic self.  i want to encourage her so that she is bold whenever she enters the world.

whew!  a tall order indeed.  i just keep praying that ben and i are continuously equipped to parent this little life.  i just want to do it well, you know?

recently, i stumbled across this lisa bloom article and thought it was quite interesting.  i must say that i am all about telling girls that they are beautiful.  {ahem…would you look at that adorable little face pictured above?} God made girls in a uniquely girl-like way.  we should celebrate this and make sure that our little girls know how precious they are.  each one a princess and cherished by The King.  however, it shouldn’t necessarily end {or begin} there.  it can be so easy to default to “awwh, aren’t you cute!”  especially with all those frilly outfits, big bows, sparkly dresses, and bright eyes… but i want to make sure to raise up a daughter who knows she is more than just all of that.  more than just a pretty face {and my, my…she has one pretty face!}  she has a deeper identity.  she has been given a mind to be used to form intelligent thoughts and participate in discourse.  she has been given a spirit that should be even more lovely and bright than her blue eyes.  she has personality.  she has a body that should be kept strong and healthy so that it is a fit temple for the Holy Spirit and can be used to serve others.  yes, she can put effort into her appearance.  yes, i hope that people compliment her.  yes, she can be lovely.  but the body isn’t just for dressing in cute clothes.  she is so much more than cute clothes.  she is so much more than a pretty face.  and for that matter, she is so much more than a smart cookie…or a talented musician…or a gifted writer…or an advanced reader…or you name it.  she is a child of God.  “charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”  i pray that the Lord helps us “bring her up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

much to my chagrin, elinor had a bit of a hipster moment the other day.  we had stripes going on.  she was wearing a baby cardigan.  and somehow, her little hair wisps styled themselves into a fashionable mohawk.  hmmm… i guess you can say that we have latent hipster tendencies here at the whitehouse home.  {sigh}  i was really hoping that we wouldn’t be those people, ya know? sorry about that, baby girl.

on that note, check out this hilarious book that we were given for christmas.  so we kind of think of it as a funny ha-ha, but i’m sure that fifteen years from now this will be the status quo for baby books.  oh, future generations…

just do it • is it in you • i’m loving it

now blow the candle out my dear and make your wish come true. a very merry unbirthday to you!

today is the official anniversary of my hubby’s birth.  but we kicked things off early with some celebrations this past weekend.  i am talking a family outing for brunch, a trip to the movies, and a dinner date at our very favorite spot.  and then, bonus!  since it was a long weekend {hurray for the market being closed} we got to spend an extra day together.  and we scheduled a leisurely day at home together.  after being out and about this weekend, we played homebodies and cuddled on the couch with movies and british telly.  it was a splendid day of doing a whole lot of nothing in particular.  just munching and chatting and laughing {and enjoying the many sounds and faces of miss elinor}  perfection.

here are some of my favorite shots from our weekend of birthday excursions.  very merry wishes to my hubby. i am so blessed to get to experience this life with him.  and the little miss thinks her papa is simply grand.  we sure do love him.  he is the best and we always have such fun together.

there’s no place like home

i am not sure what goes on this time of year…atmospheric pressure perhaps?  or maybe it is the suddenly empty and blah feeling that comes from taking down the christmas decorations.  but i always feel this overwhelming desire to redecorate and freshen up!

while perusing the pages of one of my daily blog staples { a cup of jo } i stumbled across a few pictures of a lovely home that has my mind spinning with inspiration and possibility…

and with a sewing machine in the house?  just think of what could be done!  this could be a very productive and creative and decorative spring indeed.

2012 {a year in pictures}

drumroll please…and here it is, the highly anticipated 2012 in review!  it was so much fun to go back through the archives and select some of my favorite snaps to tell the story of 2012.  boy, it was tough to narrow it down.  really tough.  now, if you are looking for a leisurely activity for your friday evening, feel free to grab your beverage of choice, curl up with a big blanket, head back to january of 2012, and read all of my posts from top to bottom.  good stuff and lots of food…

this was a pretty big year for us.  and we are looking forward to all that God has in store for us in 2013.

take a peek…after the jump as to not use up all my blog real estate…
