a song for you

photo 4

may God bless and keep you always
may your wishes all come true
may you always do for others
and let others do for you
may you build a ladder to the stars
and climb on every rung
may you stay forever young

may you grow up to be righteous
may you grow up to be true
may you always know the truth
and see the lights surrounding you
may you always be courageous
stand upright and be strong
may you stay forever young

may your hands always be busy
may your feet always be swift
may you have a strong foundation
when the winds of changes shift
may your heart always be joyful
and may your song always be sung
may you stay forever young

thanks for the words mr. dylan.

happy tuesday!  what a fabulous few days here in the desert.  we got to enjoy some time at the oh-so-swanky hotel valley ho.  i was involved in a business function so during the down time, hubby and miss elinor visited and we got to lounge in the lobby.  p.s.  nothing makes you feel “i am so not cool enough for this” quite as much as hanging around the valley ho during the summer.  it is the scene for local hispters to be seen…wearing itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikini wear OR flaunting biceps.  take your pick.  wow.  such a happening place!  such an old school cool vibe.  like rat pack in vegas cool. i felt like i should be snapping my fingers to some sinatra and sipping a martini.  of course, i was wearing a pencil skirt and doing work stuff on my computer in the lobby mod chair.  so…

photo 1

but take a look at my handsome man with our little girl!  sure, the stroller might have stuck out like a sore thumb next to all the cool kids but i think that our family is pretty darn cool.

photo 3

and elinor had so much fun being goofy with her grandpa.  plus, she totally coordinated with the deco wall and didn’t even plan it.  it is pretty clear that our baby is much cooler than we can ever hope to be.

after all that fun and busy-ness we headed back home to wind down and prepare for a new week.  this is kind of a ritual around these parts.  and usually involves some kind of home-cooked meal.  and during the summertime, i am all about simplicity.  since strawberries are just so darn scrumptious right now, i have been looking for any excuse to eat them.  so i grabbed a package of them during our trip to the market and decided to turn them into some glorious jam.  some tart and savory strawberry balsamic black pepper jam, to be exact.  we spread this glossy carmine goodness on some date and almond crackers, topped with some goat cheese and walnuts, and paired it with some red…and voila!  dinner is served.  there is something so sweet about summer suppers.  savoring light and simple dishes in the late afternoon.  nothing better, folks.

photo 2

for those who have asked about the jam, here is my “recipe”

chop up one package of organic strawberries and toss them into a saute pan with a few glugs of balsamic.  add a spoonful of raw, local honey  and some freshly cracked pepper.  let it bubble on medium heat until the balsamic reduces and the berries soften to form a thick mixture.  then, wazz it up to your desired consistency and refrigerate until you are ready to use {the jam will thicken as it cools}.  i wanted it tart and savory so i didn’t add any extra sugar…but you could always omit the pepper and add more sweetness for a more traditional jam.  or add a bouquet garni of basil to the simmering mix toward the end to infuse the jam.  OR swap out the berries for figs and throw some rosemary in there.  yum.

bits + bites

oh, hey there!  long time no blog.  my sincerest apologies for my impromptu hiatus but the long weekend mentality has been in full swing since last thursday at about 4:13pm.  it has been a good one.  i hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend.  ben took last friday off so elinor and i have been two super spoiled ladies.  {dear hubby, can you please be at home with us all the time?  thanks.  xo, your gals}

and if baked goods are any measure of productivity then we are one accomplished household.  macarons have been made {and consumed} and a birthday cake has been baked.  PLUS!  PLUS!  we introduced our baby girl to the world of big girl food.  eeeep!  i can’t even stand it. she is much to big.  and yet, she looks so tiny in her big girl chair.  sigh.

all of this rambling on is to say “hello!” and i hope you are ready for a big week on the blog.  there will be more pictures of elinor gumming avocados than you will be able to stomach.  and not to forget a whole post dedicated to the illustrious macaron.  and a birthday shout-out {or, two}.  are you excited?!  well, you should be.

until then, here is some randomness to hold you over.  enjoy!

our trademark “we are in the car going somewhere” shot + things got a little wild at the old whitehouse menagerie.  yes, coco is standing on ben’s back.  sheesh. + elinor enjoying some light reading over at grandmama and grandpa’s house + my two favorites relaxing and watching elinor’s first indy 500 {a longstanding ridley family tradition} + out and about.  go yankees! + summertime at whole foods.  we are a sucker for a new reusable bag design. + papa/daughter giggle time.  too much to handle.

we put the “happy” in happy hour

a few days backmiss elinor, hubby, and i grabbed some early dinner with my folks at st. francis.  it was mighty tasty. there is just something about heading to a restuarant on the earlier side and making the most of the evening.  it usually gives us license to try more dishes and double up…you can’t beat a happy hour deal, am i right?  and in this case, i am talking a big ol’ gourmet burger with a side of hand cut fries for seven bucks.  #winning.

the springtime weather was particularly springy and the restaurant opened up the side of the restaurant so there was a perfect breeze while we dined.  elinor sat in her little seat just playing away while we sipped some good wine and noshed on baked goat cheese with crusty bread, french onion burgers, chicken salad sandwiches, and radish/bacon/garden pea/buttermilk ranch salad.  good stuff.  and so local and fresh.  it was a simply delightful meal with great company.  happiness and satisfied tummies all around.

eyebrows

let me introduce you to elinor’s incredulous eyebrows…

photo

she shoots me this glance sometimes.  mostly when i am doing something goofy and trying to make her giggle.  oh, baby girl.  so much personality for such a petite thing.  i love all your expressions.  you are the funnest.

speaking of fun…i hope you have a fabulous weekend!

the eyes have it.

this little ball of blue-eyed cuteness is happy as can be that monday is here.  her mama and papa?  well, not so much.  our eyes are sleepy today and could use just one more day of lounging.  but the little one?  she is bright-eyed and ready to take on a new week of baby happenings.

 photo 3 photo 2 photo 1

oh sweet elinor, may you always view each day with joyful anticipation and tenacity.

…and may your parents be inspired by your spirit.

a wilting glance

have you ever wondered what happens when you disrupt elinor’s blissful playtime?  this.  this face happens.  look at those eyeballs!  and yes, she is shaking her fist at me.  such sass!  i just don’t know where she gets it…

in spite of that intimidating expression, i am enjoying seeing her personality more and more these days.  just think of the months to come!  just imagine the teen years… we have a joyful, curious, determined, independent, boisterous, and sometimes bashful little lady on our hands.  and i wouldn’t have it any other way.

contemplations of mr. charles

Charliei must say, i am starting to warm to this “elinor”.  she smells good.  and she has a pretty cute little face.  i like to hang out with her in her toy paradise that mom bought for her amusement.  boy, she is spoiled.  where is MY toy paradise mom?  regardless, she is a good playmate.  sometimes i get to lick her fingers and the occasional ear or two.  and once i tried to lick up some stuff that she spit out of her mouth, which i can only assume was for me, but mom would have none of that.  apparently that is “gross charlie” and mom shooed me away.  mostly, she just sits there and makes her tiny human sounds.  i don’t quite understand her language but mom seems to.  mom has started talking to her in goos and ghees and gahs and pfffs.  the two of them sound pretty silly, if you ask me.  i like to respond to all this nonsense with a sassy little grumble, just to stay involved in the conversation as to not be left out of any inside jokes.

all in all, life is good with the tiny human.  if staring and drooling and swatting and batting and ear-tugging means love…then she must like me an awful lot.

sew. a needle pulling thread

i have been so inspired to sew lately!  i don’t know if it is some kind of maternal phenomenon.  or if it being inundated by super cute baby clothes.  or if it my queasy gut that just can’t justify paying to ship all those fancy european nursery items across the pond.  or if it is all those trips to the quilting store with my mom.  but something in me says, “i can make that!  i can sew!”

sew {pun} here is the plan: i am going to get myself a sewing machine {mom, aren’t you proud?!} and become a sewing machine {pun again.  sheesh.  are you annoyed yet?}

really, truly.  i have picked out a singer that should do the trick.  it should arrive next week. and then, well…i am jumping in!  i am going to lean on those home ec classes from high school and pick my mom’s brain too.  but mostly, i am just going to play and try things.  i am going to find myself some fabulous fabric and have at it!  and yes, i will post my finished products here for all to see.  the good, the bad, and the ugly.  i am really excited to do this!  i can do it…right?!  right.

here are some fun things that have served as inspiration for my new hobby.  i am going to try my hand at creating my own versions of these.  should be fun and at times, comical.

a fresh year with fresh plans

okay, lets talk resolutions.  i am not so good at the traditional resolutions thing.  i have done it in the past but i usually cheat and keep it too easy or manageable to ensure that i can check it off the list. {i have problems, people.  a compulsive need to cross stuff off the list}

this year, hubby and i decided to sit down together and do this thing.  for real.  together.  we compiled a wish list of everything from little to large.  and gosh darn it, we are going to do it!  this will be a year of joy and peace and contentment and intention.  we want to be present.  to enjoy the moment.  to be content with our life.  we are going to savor.  as thoreau, we want to go into the woods, if you will.  ”to live deliberately. to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. to put to rout all that was not life, and not, when i had come to die, discover that i had not lived.”

matthew 6:25-34 will serve as the polestar of 2013.

therefore i tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. are you not of more value than they? and which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? and why are you anxious about clothing? consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet i tell you, even solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. but if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, o you of little faith? therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘what shall we eat?’ or ‘what shall we drink?’ or ‘what shall we wear?’ but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

this is a fresh year folks.  ripe with possibilities.  fresh, with no mistakes in it. {thank you for that one, anne shirley} and so, we walked through the areas of life and jotted down what we want to do in 2013.  and yes, it will continue to grow as the year goes on.  we have high hopes for you, new year.
