weekendness

this was a good weekend.  we enjoyed some much-needed scheduled nothing and got a bunch done.  this is such a busy season.  so when we have a few hours to relax together, plan together, check stuff off the ol’ to-do list together, and eat yummy food together it is perfect.

even though much of the weekend was spent driving here and there and doing thing after thing…we were able to spend some time outside in the delicious springtime sun while savoring some tasty plates, sipping on refreshing beverages, and licking on cones of cold, creamy goodness.  yup.  it was amazing.  it doesn’t get much better than this…

me and my bearded, specs wearing man + a sweet little peanut chilling in her stroller.  feet up.  tongue out.  + a grapefruit beverage at windsor + cheddar biscuits with gravy and sausage + yes.  i had brunch dessert.  toasted coconut and double chocolate ice cream from churn.  the place is right next door…it is meant to be.  +  miss elinor with her “please papa, please may i have some sausage?” face

how was your weekend?  are you ready for monday?

all things bright and beautiful

spring.  ah, spring.  feels good, doesn’t it?  amazing what one little day can do.  things feel fresh.  the air feels different. a spring in your step, if you will.  welcome!  you sprightly season, you.

springtime makes me want fresh fruit and hot dogs and peanuts {preferably at the ball game} and ice cream and floral prints and bright colors.  this saturday will be spent switching out wardrobes and tidying up to make way for a fresh season.  i am hoping to dive into some cheery DIY projects and to add more fresh flowers to our home.

so happy to smell the orange blossoms in the air again.  bonjour, spring buds.  nice to see you again, brightly painted toenails.

something splendid

a spoonful of springtime.  jeni’s splendid ice creams proudly presents absinthe + meringues

are you ready for spring?  perhaps this will get you in the mood…

bright, warm absinthe—with a soft, mild licorice flavor—in grass-grazed cream, with airy sweet, hand-piped meringues. matcha powder for color and a clean finish. inspired by the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, it tastes like a pizzelle.

32 weeks

cravings & such:  well, i have just acquiesced at this point.  i am a lame preggo.  no shocking cravings.  nothing.  just the usual lineup.  i do really enjoy a cheeseburger and fries with a shake.  and i love ice cream.  and cheese.  and pizza.  but, that isn’t exactly news.  sigh.  oh well, if my only complaint is that this pregnancy has been business as usual, i am pretty blessed.

the bump:  feeling more bowling ball like these days.  since elinor is gaining almost half a pound a week at this point, the belly is growing right along with her.

cool & cute things:  little miss weighs about 3.75 pounds and is about 16.7 inches long.  she will gain a third to half of her birth weight during the next seven weeks as she fattens up for survival outside the womb.

new things:  baby girl now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair [or at least respectable peach fuzz].  her skin is becoming soft and smooth as she plumps up and loses her wrinkled appearance.

meaningful moments:  scheduling an appointment with a pediatrician.  scheduling our hospital tour.  this is happening folks.

the countdown:  56 days to go!

current size:  weight of a large jicama.  funny, she feels much heavier…

31 weeks

cravings & such:  this was a much healthier week.  barely any ice cream! with the exception of one yummy bowl of so delicious chocolate ice cream [made with coconut milk].  self control, folks.  i am still sucking back those smoothies and mucho coffee.  trenta, iced, decaf coffee.  yum.  i think i have consumed more coffee in the past three months than in all my pre-preggo months combined.  it tastes so yummy.  and, really hits the spot when it is hot, which is currently every. single. day.

the bump:  it feels huge.  and it moves and rumbles a lot these days.  little miss likes to use my internal organs as punching bags these days which can cause quite a ruckus.  so strange to have my midsection completely taken over by another person.

cool & cute things:  miss elinor measures over 16 inches long and weighs about 3.3 pounds…and is apparently heading for a growth spurt.  oh boy, get ready belly.  things are about to get serious.

new things:  baby can turn her head from side to side and her arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as fat accumulates underneath her skin.  by all means, take all the fat you would like.

meaningful moments:  hearing her heartbeat again.  getting kicked in the ribs for the first [noticeable] time.  that was an interesting feeling.  i’m pretty sure i audibly responded with “ugh!  you little monkey…”  buying our not-so-diaper-bag diaper bag.  putting sheets on her crib mattress.

the countdown:  63 days to go.  [gulp]  we are talking two months.  and, i have now entered the doctor-appointment-every-two-weeks phase of the pregnancy.  then, at 36 weeks, it is every week until baby girl arrives.  if i do my math right, that means that we are as few as 5 appointments away from go-time!

current size:  the weight of four navel oranges

30 weeks

cravings & such:  this was a pretty bad week, i must admit.  in an effort to get more calcium in my diet,  i kinda gave myself license to indulge in much too much ice cream.  oops.  i think i just needed to get that out of my system.  check!  i did somewhat counteract those actions by consuming a few green smoothies.  my recipe of choice is: spinach, spirulina, pineapple, peaches, blueberries, almond milk, flax powder, and whey protein.  elinor LOVES these, by the way.  what a good little girl.  and, spinach contains calcium and iron which are preggo musts.  i am not a huge raw spinach fan so this is a sneaky way to consume those leafy greens.  here’s to more smoothies and fewer pints of ice cream!  i will keep you posted…

the bump:  i am sure that it has doubled in the past week.  or, at least it feels that way.  and she still has four or more pounds to go!

cool & cute things:  baby’s eyesight continues to develop, though it is not very keen.  even after birth, she will keep those peepers closed for a good part of the day.  she will respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision and only make out objects a few inches from her face.  looks like it will be a few months before she can truly grasp the cuteness that is her room.  i suppose i can hold off on buying that mobile for a few more months…

new things:  little miss is about 15.7 inches long now and weighs almost 3 pounds.  a pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds baby girl but that volume will decrease as baby gets bigger and takes up more room.  things are about to get crowded…

meaningful moments:  spending time in e’s room with charlie and coco.  letting them explore and get comfortable with things.  they like to stand on their hind legs and peer between the rails of the crib.  their little noses just sniffing like crazy.  pretty cute.  and, they both hopped up in my lap while i was test-driving the new rocking chair.  they are my furry little babies, for sure.

the countdown:  70 days!  folks, that is really close to 60 days…which will mean two months to go!  goodness gracious.

current size:  a cabbage

this was a pretty great weekend.  don’t you just love birthdays?!  what a perfect excuse to eat yummy food, indulge in way too much dessert, spend extra time alone with my man, and do some shopping!  fun. fun. fun.

even though my birthday was technically on friday, i received my hubby’s blessing to commandeer the entire weekend.  we did it up.  we kicked things off early with a whitehouse family dinner on my birthday eve. then we enjoyed a hubby & me date night on friday for dinner and shopping…shopping for baby goodies.  we walked away with a bag of tiny little apparel to begin her wardrobe.  a very merry un-birhday to you, baby girl.  it was so much fun. then we had an ice cream social [okay, there were only four people there but there was ice cream and we were social] followed by some additional baby girl shopping.  this time, it was off to home depot for paint.  wahoo!  and finally, we wrapped up the birthday-palooza weekend with a dinner with my dad, my fianc-ed sister, and her man.  whew!  needless to say, it was a splendid few days.  i feel quite celebrated.  quite full.  and actually, quite accomplished.  i couldn’t ask for more.

here are some snaps.

date night with my handsome man + citizen public house.  yes.  again. + fondue with pears, grilled bread, and peppered sausage + the famous and scrumptious [gf] fried chicken and waffles with almond butter and desert lavender honey + plate o’ bread and sausage and cheddar and grainy mustard + rockin’ the scarf and looking like a “fashionable, old-fashioned cleaning lady” as ben’s sister katie calls it + a bag of tiny baby goodies for our tiny baby girl + a table-full of gifts from my man.  the contents thereof: a cookbook, chocolate bars from vosages, baubles and a scarf from j.crew, a giant bag of my favorite decaf coffee beans from local roaster matador, and a fancy-schmancy cold coffee brewing system + miss coco.  she was very jealous of the my presents and the baby’s clothes… + enjoying some of the aforementioned fancy-schmancy cold brewed coffee + a vegan peanut butter cookie from tammie coe.  ah.maz.ing + heading out for some ice cream + sweet republic artisan ice cream + some sweet republic press & a sassy face + my huckleberry ice cream + painting supplies for baby girl’s room! + off to church + dinner at the greene house + the california-cool decor + my dad + my b-day balloon + the menu + the goods…tuna; potato gnocchi with sausage, peas, and mushrooms; chicken ravioli; and scallops + some share-able birthday dessert…chocolate bars of yumminess.

as i was assembling the collection, i realized that this weekend was a pretty fabulous tour of some great local venues and vendors from the scottsdale/phoenix area.  fox restaurants, citizen public house, sweet republic, matador coffee roasters, tammie coe.  we are blessed to live in a cool town.

this was a big one.  dinners with family, a birthday celebration, car races, and memorial day.

here is the pictoral plethora to prove it…

the weekend is here + a game of scrabble + we used all of the letters!  such word nerds + quick stop at jimmy johns + my very handsome date + a tasty sandwich for him and a turkey, lettuce roll-up for me + can’t forget the chips and oatmeal cookie + our weekend entertainment…sherlock holmes season two and burn notice + the buddies enjoying some lap time + summertime sunshine + a refreshing pink drink for ben + homemade tostadas and enchiladas at the whitehouse home…sooo amazingly delicious + dessert: warm berries over graeter’s ice cream + off to the races! + some sunday brunch while we watch indy + hanging out with old family friends during our annual tradition + mr. charles being a good boy on his many car rides this weekend

hip, hip, hurray for mothers day!

this was a big one, folks.  we gathered all of the assorted family members together at one house for a big-time celebration.  it was so much fun!  the planning was fun, the preparing was fun, the cooking was fun, the eating was fun.  it was an all-around great day.  the kids took care of all the details, from the table to the flowers all the way to the dessert.  then, we all gathered together and enjoyed the day.  it was relaxing and celebratory.  just how any family gathering should be.  i hope our mothers were honored and blessed.  we sure are honored to be their kids and blessed by them.

::  the mocktails  ::

in honor of mothers day, my hubby, the mixologist du jour, created a fabulous menu of refreshing and festive beverages.  with the help of his mixologist’s apprentice, faith, creative drinks were stirred and muddled for serving.  the clear crowd favorites were “the derby” [a mild-mannered mint julep] and “the faux-jito” [a rum-less version of the cuban classic].  although, “the berry happy mothers day” might win in the appearance category for its vibrant purple hue and muddled berries.

::  happy conversation + mixing and mingling + relaxation  ::

everyone kicked back with their beverage of choice while the meal was being prepared.  the families shared stories and chatted with giggling and sipping.  the guys even got to watch some golf.  the kitchen was the center of the excitement as the aromas of potatoes and mushrooms and onions and bacon and eggs wafted into the livingroom.

::  a delicious brunch spread and table  ::

::  dessert  ::

we ordered the super special mothers day collection from jeni’s ice cream.  so, we had a tasty little tasting of unique ice cream flavors like hummingbird cake, white house cherry, sake plum, and icelandic happy marriage cake.  plus, rachel claire made a yummy berry crumble.  a little something warm with a little something cold.  the perfect way to end a meal.

farewell to another wonderful weekend.  and just like that, a new week is here.  hubby and i made the most of every moment.  we did some friday night grocery shopping and baking.  then on saturday, i headed off to help at a bridal shower while ben had some boy’s time and took in a guy movie.  then, we joined up again in the afternoon for some quick cleaning up…then it was off to dinner with ben’s sister and her hubby at windsor [yes, again...it just never gets old].  after all that, we took it easy on sunday and spent the afternoon watching a western and catching up on laundry.  capped off with a sushi date night.  it was a pretty great few days.  over much too soon.  but, another weekend is always right around the corner.  until then, here are some of our favorite snaps.

here’s to a fabulous, fresh week!
