dear peanut

hello, little miss.  i hope that all is well inside the bump.  i know that you are getting bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger.  you have been kicking up a storm!  i can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  a lovely, bright, sparkling light.

speaking of light…your tiny little chandelier lamp has arrived and been placed in your room.  it is small and a teeny bit glitzy.  perfect for twinkling and casting warm shadows on the wall during our late night feedings.  it is our new favorite.

guess what?  starbucks pumpkin spice lattes are officially on the menu now!  and that means that fall is on the horizon and october is right around the corner.  october means that you will be here soon.  i love the fall.  and now, i have another pretty big reason to like that time of year.  and while it is still warm outside, i know that we are getting close to sweaters and boots and hot chocolate and pumpkin pie and turkey.  it is so much fun to think about all the wonderful things that we will get to experience together.  you will be here for thanksgiving this year!  we will get to wheel you around in your stroller while the whole family shops for christmas gifts.  you will get to watch all of our christmas movie favorites with us.  you will have your own little ornament on the tree.  and that is just the beginning, sweet girl.  aren’t we just going to have the funnest times?  i think so.

all our love to you, little peanut.

love, your mama + your papa

made in the shade

aren’t these just fabulous?

i love cool lamps but they can be just so darn expensive!  and even if you do pay the price, they lack a certain “special” quality.  that unique twist that makes them fit perfectly into the decor.

and so, i have decided follow in the footsteps of those brilliant folks at design*sponge and try my hand at creating a personalized lampshade or two.

there is never a shortage of fabulous prints at the fabric store so perhaps i will pop over there with my mom one afternoon and snag some interesting pieces.  that plus a good ol’ vintage etsy find and i should be in good shape for raw materials.  from there, i am hoping that i can just follow the step-by-step and then, voila!  a gorgeous and one-of-a-kind lamp for miss elinor’s room.

wish me luck!

what fun diy projects are you tackling these days?

30 weeks

cravings & such:  this was a pretty bad week, i must admit.  in an effort to get more calcium in my diet,  i kinda gave myself license to indulge in much too much ice cream.  oops.  i think i just needed to get that out of my system.  check!  i did somewhat counteract those actions by consuming a few green smoothies.  my recipe of choice is: spinach, spirulina, pineapple, peaches, blueberries, almond milk, flax powder, and whey protein.  elinor LOVES these, by the way.  what a good little girl.  and, spinach contains calcium and iron which are preggo musts.  i am not a huge raw spinach fan so this is a sneaky way to consume those leafy greens.  here’s to more smoothies and fewer pints of ice cream!  i will keep you posted…

the bump:  i am sure that it has doubled in the past week.  or, at least it feels that way.  and she still has four or more pounds to go!

cool & cute things:  baby’s eyesight continues to develop, though it is not very keen.  even after birth, she will keep those peepers closed for a good part of the day.  she will respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision and only make out objects a few inches from her face.  looks like it will be a few months before she can truly grasp the cuteness that is her room.  i suppose i can hold off on buying that mobile for a few more months…

new things:  little miss is about 15.7 inches long now and weighs almost 3 pounds.  a pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds baby girl but that volume will decrease as baby gets bigger and takes up more room.  things are about to get crowded…

meaningful moments:  spending time in e’s room with charlie and coco.  letting them explore and get comfortable with things.  they like to stand on their hind legs and peer between the rails of the crib.  their little noses just sniffing like crazy.  pretty cute.  and, they both hopped up in my lap while i was test-driving the new rocking chair.  they are my furry little babies, for sure.

the countdown:  70 days!  folks, that is really close to 60 days…which will mean two months to go!  goodness gracious.

the glow – a study in light

aren’t those just lovely?  these images are from a fabulous little site called the glowa glimpse into the world of inspiring and fashionable moms.  all of the pictures have a certain glow to them.  a characteristic light that floods and illuminates the beauty of the scene.  mamas and their kids.  their homes. their life.

this site got me thinking about the beauty of light.  doesn’t light just make everything better?  brighter?  more vivid?  amazing.  and then, my hubby read the following entry from spurgeon’s morning and evening.  it was perfect.

quietly contemplate the Lamb as the light of heaven. light in Scripture is the emblem of joy. the joy of the saints in heaven is comprised in this: Jesus chose us, loved us, bought us, cleansed us, robed us, kept us, glorified us: we are here entirely through the Lord Jesus. each one of these thoughts shall be to them like a cluster of the grapes of eshcol. light is also the cause of beauty. nought of beauty is left when light is gone. without light no radiance flashes from the sapphire, no peaceful ray proceedeth from the pearl; and thus all the beauty of the saints above comes from Jesus. as planets, they reflect the light of the Sun of Righteousness; they live as beams proceeding from the central orb. if he withdrew, they must die; if his glory were veiled, their glory must expire. light is also the emblem of knowledge. in heaven our knowledge will be perfect, but the Lord Jesus himself will be the fountain of it. dark providences, never understood before, will then be clearly seen, and all that puzzles us now will become plain to us in the light of the Lamb. oh! what unfoldings there will be and what glorifying of the God of love! light also means manifestation. light manifests. in this world it doth not yet appear what we shall be. God’s people are a hidden people, but when Christ receives his people into heaven, he will touch them with the wand of his own love, and change them into the image of his manifested glory. they were poor and wretched, but what a transformation! they were stained with sin, but one touch of his finger, and they are bright as the sun, and clear as crystal. oh! what a manifestation! all this proceeds from the exalted Lamb. whatever there may be of effulgent splendour, Jesus shall be the centre and soul of it all. oh! to be present and to see him in his own light, the King of kings, and Lord of lords!

“the Lamb is the light thereof”  revelation 21:23

nought of beauty is left when light is gone.  thank you, Lord, for being the source of light.  thank you for illuminating our world with not only the radiance and warmth of the sun, but of the resplendence and beauty of your Son.  may i glow and emanate your beauty in a dark world.  may many be drawn to your incandescence.

28 weeks

cravings & such:  i suppose i am getting more picky-choosey.  we are used to planning our meals for the week and lately, i have been finding myself inspired to eat things that we didn’t exactly plan for that particular week.  i think i need to build some flex nights into our menu plans to accommodate my “i kinda feel like a salad tonight instead of chicken curry…” moods.

the bump:  well, i am trying to keep up with the ever-growing bump.  sometimes i forget that it is there and try to do things like i would have pre-bump.  silly me.  one great example?  i burned my belly on the iron the other day while i was trying to get some wrinkles out of my shirt as i was rushing out the door.  i kinda lost my belly-depth-perception there.  oops.

* and don’t worry mom, it was really mild.  everything is okay.

cool & cute things:  baby weighs in at 2 1/4 pounds and measures 14.8 inchese from head to heels.  baby can blink her eyes, which now sport lashes.  i hope they are just fabulous!

new things:  with increasingly developed eyesight, baby girl may be able to see the light that filters in through the womb.  i wonder if miss elinor will get my eyesight or ben’s?  a little toddler with sassy frames?  pretty cute.  baby girl is also developing billions of neurons in her brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

meaningful moments:  writing shower dates in my dayplanner.  my daily wanderings into her room, just to visit.  hanging her cute prints on the wall!

the countdown:  84 days to go!

15 weeks

cravings & such:  bread.  and still sushi.  and mexican food.  and berries. and gigantic salads.  and fries.  and burgers.  the usual.  ben and i did make that in-n-out run last weekend.  it was pretty fabulous.  but, it wasn’t exactly 1am and i didn’t consume five double-doubles and animal fries.  we split and burger and fries.  pretty weak, i know.  right now, i can’t consume a ton of food [or even a regular serving] in one sitting without feeling pretty icky and full [probably because there is an apple-sized baby in there taking up extra space].  so, i have to stick to the six or so mini-meals.  i am pretty excited because we are going to enjoy some yummy brunch food for mothers day AND a dinner at bourbon steak to celebrate the end of my big work event next week. hurray for burgers and perfectly crispy fries [its called duck fat, people].

the bump:  a new trimester.  still no “official” bump. but i feel it, any day now…

cool & cute things:  baby is busy swimming around and practicing breathing and digesting .  s/he is moving amniotic fluid through the nose and upper respiratory tract which helps the air sacs in the lungs begin to develop.  baby’s legs are growing longer than the arms now and s/he can move all those tiny little joints and limbs.from crown to rump, s/he measures about 4 inches long and weighs 2.5 ounces.  baby gained a whole ounce in a week!  big jump.

new things:  although baby’s eyelids are still fused shut, s/he can now sense light.  if i were to shine a flashlight at my belly, our little peanut would move away from the beam.

meaningful moments:  hearing the heartbeat again.  that whooshing sound makes me smile every time.  sometimes i can’t believe that there is a tiny person in there!  the strong and rhythmic pounding of peanut’s heart is such an incredible reminder of the miracle that is taking place.  how remarkable and staggering that God is doing prodigious things in very intricate and delicate ways…inside of little ol’ me.  what an honor.  it really puts things into perspective…

a fresh look

i’ve started feeling that delicate warmth in the breeze….the one that signifies that we are on the cusp of spring.  as you have probably noticed, i have been trying to prepare for the seasonal shift.  getting organized, getting a new do, moving furniture, making lists, and planning projects.  so, i decided that it was time for a fresh take on our bedroom.  while we have thoroughly enjoyed our previous bedding set [warm orange with cream, burgundy, and chocolate brown accents.  very rich] i’ve been in the mood for something on the other end of the spectrum.

we have such lovely light in our bedroom.  it pours in our windows and is filtered and softened by our perfectly textured, flax-colored wool curtains which are just heavy enough to block out the painfully bright desert rays – while still allowing a warm glow to seep in.  the sunlight is beautifully dispersed as it playfully prances around our room with a luminous and sprightly exuberance. i was inspired by this light to lighten the color palette in our room while maintaining a welcoming warmth.  so, i opted for some monochromatic bedding [cream and taupe and flax and ecru].  this provided more contrast against our dark wood and leather headboard.  it also blended somewhat seamlessly with the drapes, walls, lamps, and carpet.  a pleasantly fresh color story of nuanced beige to serve as a soothing base for our room.

i have also bee inspired by pops of color.  from jcrew’s new spring line [yes, i am accepting donations to my spring wardrobe fund.  i am going for one of each from the lookbook so make sure to give generously people] to pins on pinterest, i have been craving vibrant hues.  what’s a girl to do?  i needed to find a way to juxtapose the serene and soft with the bold and bright.  i wanted something subtle and lovely with strategic bursts of lively pigment.  so, i decided to start by utilizing elements that were already in my possession.  i cleared out the clutter and added some glamour to our dresser by displaying my perfume bottles, bracelets, and wedding bouquet.  then, i headed over to my jewelry nook and gave it a makeover.  instead of simply storing my favorite pieces, i thought that it would be a fun idea to feature them.  i grabbed all my favorite jewels and put them up on the wall. voilà!  bursts of color!  no purchase necessary.  i just put some of my favorite items on display.  my own personalized collage of glitz and baubles.

the final touches.  since i was working with a subtle monochromatic backdrop, the fun would be in the details.  i wanted to add some visual interest to the bed to create a true focal point.  to do so i went to the linen closet and grabbed a few of my friends, the throw pillows.  then, i borrowed a bright yellow pillow from downstairs to complete the motif.  in this case, my superfluous pillow purchasing compulsion really paid off!  i love decorative pillows and when i see something fabulous, i can’t resist the urge to scoop it up.  hubby can attest that i always have extra on hand.  that way, i can mix-and-match to create new looks whenever i want.  [it is my theory that throw pillows are to home decor what jewelry is to fashion] all i have to do is head to the closet and do some shopping from my own private stash.  now that i think about it…this is actually a good tip: pick up random do-dads along the way that inspire you and then hold onto them.  create a private shopping stash.  then, you can pull out those gems at a later date when the mood strikes.  you can even have private shopping swaps with friends to acquire new items without buying a thing!

lastly, i printed some of our favorite pictures, locations, and inspirations to create customized wall art.  this just required a few frames and nails and a whole lot of help from hubby to get each picture “just so” on the wall.  now, we have a unique arrangement of prints, botanicals, balloons, antique doors, european streets, seagulls, scenes from canada, and california sunset landscapes.  plus, any time i get bored or inspired afresh, all i have to do is print some new images to give the wall a facelift and to bring a new spirit to the room.

we are quite pleased with the end result.  and it only took a couple of purchases and some artful switcheroos to get the job done.  say hello to a fresh bedroom for spring!
