un fin de semana de diversión con las casablancas

this was a great weekend.  we had lots of sunshine and a lovely breeze.

and we kicked things off with big bowls of spicy goodness from good ol’ chipotle.  that place is just so darn good.  spice and flavor.  and meat.  oh, you tasty barbacoa, you.

and then, we wrapped up the weekend {and celebrated cinco de mayo} with a little fiesta with ben’s family.  with refreshing homemade sorbet and everything!  i’m talking mango + lime sorbet with a sprinkling of ancho chile powder to add some warmth.  increíblemente deliciosa.  what a relaxing day.  street tacos and fresh salsas…oh yes, and hanging out with our baby girl.  a baby girl who is looking older and older and less baby-ish each day.  sigh.

i love date nights with this guy*.  we are blessed to have very willing and eager babysitters in our lives {thank you family} which affords us the opportunity to plop miss elinor at their pad and take off for a dinner together.  so friday night, we did just that.  my hubby and i sat on the patio at one of our favorite mexican food spots, blue adobe and enjoyed scrumptious dips and salsas and spices and peppers and meats.  yum.  it was leisurely and perfect.  a relaxing and ideal way to kick off the weekend.

*how dashing does he look with that scruff?  and did you notice how beards were the “it” accessory for hollywood’s men at the oscars last night?  my guy is so cool.  way to be on trend, hubby.

el cinco

i don’t actually know what cinco de mayo is a celebration for…in my book, it is the celebration of all things peppers and tacos and tequila.  so, to celebrate cinco de mayo, ben and i paired up with my parents and took a trip to the barrio queen.  oh. my. goodness.  it was some amazing stuff, people.  the atmosphere was fabulous.  the company was most enjoyable.  and the food…oh, the food.  remarkable flavor and such complex recipes.  every bite was delicious.  a pretty darn fabulous time.

welcome to the barrio queen + that cool decor i mentioned earlier + dad + mom [in her festive dress, no less] + mexican coke.  the best kind.  a big, heavy bottle.  made with real cane sugar + a pretty little cocktail [chipotle peach margarita: blanco with peach puree, agave nectar, fresh lime and orange juice dusted with chipotle].  it sure did look good and smell good.  i’m not going to lie, it was no bueno being preggo on cinco.  i’m not exactly a big drinker.  it is kind of take it or leave it…but, i do really enjoy a tart margarita with my spicy, salty mexican food.  eso es lo que pasa.  at least our little peanut enjoys spicy food, super hot peppers, and queso.  not complaints here. + house guacamole with pomegranate seeds and a side of fresh chips + QUESO!!!  choriqueso:  menonita cheese fondue topped with longaniza sausage.  it was THE PERFECT QUESO.  fresh.  real cheese.  melty.  flavorful. + the table winner for stunning presentation and interesting flavor goes to…chiles rellenos!  16 de septiembre:  chiles en nogada with black figs, apricots, pecans, golden raisins, onions, garlic, chicken, red wine all in a roasted poblano pepper. served over a walnut cream with a pomegranate garnish.  muy delicioso doesn’t even begin to cover it.  it was a life changing dish [as far as my palate is concerned].

this was an evening worth repeating.  in fact, the barrio queen has this amazing taco menu where you can mix-and-match tacos to create a customized plate to your liking.  a lot like how sushi bars do it.  soooo…that will be happening very soon.  ¡adiós, barrio queen! hasta la próxima vez.

13 weeks

cravings & such:  this week, i am thinking that our little peanut was into dairy.  i was very happy eating all things cheese. and, i think that i enjoyed two or three…okay four…ice cream cones.  i am currently obsessed with just plain ol’ chocolate ice cream [häagen-dazs, please].  again, nothing too shocking to report.  i am a big fan of cheese and ice cream most of the time.  this section will really get interesting if i start craving raw tomatoes with a side of cucumbers and piles of cilantro on top. [yuck]

the bump:  right now, i just look like a ate a big meal.  we aren’t to the cute little bump stage yet.  okay, baby…it is time to make yourself known.  i am ready and waiting for that little bump to officially pop out.  you can do it…

cool & cute things:  baby is almost three inches long and weighs nearly an ounce.  and, baby’s body is staring to catch up his/her oversized head.  if it is a girl, she now has more than two million eggs in her ovaries!  how they all fit in there, i will never know.  God is so intricate and amazing.  yes, the creation of the universe was quite impressive but i think that the creation of a tiny person inside of another person [me!] is where He really gets to show His grandeur.  i love it when God gets to show off :)

new things:  baby has fingerprints!

meaningful moments:  putting all my thoughts about our little peanut down on “paper”.  i started writing letters to the little one so that i can put them all into a book along with pictures and highlights from the pregnancy.  i hope that it will be a cherished memento for our little family.

12 weeks

cravings & such:  i am liking the spicy foods right now [that really isn't anything new].  current food loves?  mexican, asian, turkey and cheese subs with lots of herbs and vinegar and shredded lettuce, and tart frozen yogurt with berries.  still no aversions or sickness to report.  i am one lucky girl.

the bump:  i feel like it is totally noticeable but nobody has told me that i am looking fat so that’s good.  [thanks for being kind, folks]

cool & cute things:  baby now has reflexes! fingers will soon begin to open and close. the mouth will make sucking movements. toes will curl.  eye muscles will clench.  the baby will also squirm in response to abdominal touches.  and, good news!  the baby now looks like a human instead of a tiny little picasso.  the eyes have moved from the sides to the front of the head and the ears are right where they should be.  whew!

new things:  my hair feels really thick right now…but also very dry.  so, i am having to adjust my morning routine to accommodate. just the first [and very mild] of many adjustments.

meaningful moments:  going through site after site and book after book of baby names.  we have the girl’s name locked in but boy names are tough for some reason.  we have about four names in the mix so far.  any ideas?

the countdown:  196 days to go!  under the 200 mark…
