scents from serge lutens

he is a genius, i tell you.  these perfumes just melt into your skin and become a natural aura.  i lo-ove the chergui scent. warm and deep and rich notes of tobacco, honey, amber, and ginger.  i mean, check out the official description…

a fire fanned by the wind, a desert in flames. as if bursting from the earth, chergui, a desert wind, creates an effect that involves suction more than blowing, carrying plants, insects and twigs along in an inescapable ascent. its full, persistent gusts crystallize shrubs, bushes and berries, which proceed to scorch, shrivel up and pay a final ransom in saps, resins and juices. night falls on a still-smoldering memory, making way for the fragrant, ambery and candied aromas by the alchemist that is chergui.

24 weeks

cravings & such:  again, not much going on in that department.  i have been wanting cold and crisp food which i think is more about the 100 + degree weather than the baby.

the bump:  yeah, i have one.  and it does not like constricting clothing.

cool & cute things:  baby is growing steadily and has gained about 4 ounces since last week.  she is over a pound and is almost a foot long!  she is pretty long and lean at this point but will begin to plump up and fill out proportionally soon.  good thing, long and lean just isn’t our style, baby girl.

new things:  her brain is developing quickly right now.  eek!  more placenta brain for me…  and her taste buds are developing.  those little guys will come in pretty handy around our house, let me tell ya.  the lungs are developing the respiratory tree that will help the air sacs inflate once baby girl is here.  her skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon.

meaningful moments:  feeling her move and understanding her routine more and more.  she is one crazy baby.

the countdown:  112 days to go!  holy moly…we are almost under the 100 day mark!  24 weeks means we have four months (or less) to go!

current size: length of an ear of corn

23 weeks

cravings & such:  nothing new to report.  i am the lamest pregnant lady ever!  where are these pickles and ice cream cravings that i have heard about.  come on baby girl, let’s get crazy and work on expanding that palate!

the bump:  yup.  i still have one.  and it is getting bigger…

cool & cute things:  baby girl’s sense of movement is well developed by now and can feel it when i move around.  apparently i should have private dance parties with her.  we’ll see about that.  but, if you happen to witness my swaying or doing the macarena, you’ll know why.  baby girl is 11 inches long and weighs over a pound.

new things:  blood vessels in the lungs are developing to prepare for breathing.  and, the inner ear is fully formed so she can hear whatever i hear [but not at the same level].  which would explain why she gets her in-utero groove on whenever i play music.

meaningful moments:  another doctor appointment [we are on the monthly appointment scheduled now].  being reassured that you are doing well.  hearing your heartbeat again.

the countdown:  119 days to go!

current size: weighs as much as a large mango

22 weeks

cravings & such:  still loving meat and dairy over here.  the carb-love phase has gone away and been replaced by an obsession with cheese.  hubby has no complaints.

the bump:  growing!  it is kind of fun playing a wardrobe version of hide-and-seek with the bump.  i can strategically camouflage the belly with certain articles of clothing and really make it pop with others.  preggo lady entertainment at its finest.

cool & cute things:  feeling way more movement these days.  AND, ben is beginning to join in the fun!  plus, baby girl is starting to look more like a miniature newborn.  her lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct and tiny tooth buds are even developing beneath the gums.  baby girl’s eyes have formed but the irises still lack pigment.  she is 11 inches long and weighs almost 1 pound!  speaking of weight gain…i have heard rumors that from 20 weeks on, i should expect to gain about a pound a week?!  seriously?  yikes.

new things:  the baby is covered in fine hair [lanugo] and has developed skin wrinkles that will be filled in by fat in the coming months.  baby chub, people!  so cute.  and, the pancreas is developing steadily.

meaningful moments:  having my first “belly touches” by people.  fortunately, they are people i love.  i must admit that i am dreading the “belly caresses from strangers” portion of the pregnancy… i’ve heard that personal space and boundary violations abound as the belly grows.  hmmm…

the countdown:  126 days to go!

current size: length of a spaghetti squash

21 weeks

a little family photo

cravings & such:  same ol’ stuff.  but i have been having a major love of dairy.  cheese and yogurt and cottage cheese.  can’t get enough of that.  and as long as i stick to the healthier versions of dairy instead of indulging in pint after pint of ben and jerry’s, i think we should be okay.

the bump:  getting bigger but still in that kind of awkward, semi-bump phase.  not exactly a cute, big, obvious preggo belly…but we should be there before you know it.  my normal wardrobe still fits…it is just requiring some re-styling to help me accentuate the fact that i am actually 21 weeks pregnant instead of just looking like a indulged in a large meal.

cool & cute things:  fluttering movements will be intensifying into full-fledged kicks and nudges.  and, she is becoming more rhythmic and patterned in her movements.  she is 10.5 inches s long and weighs in at three-quarters of a pound [wahoo!  we are using pound language for baby girl.  big day]

new things:  baby girl’s eyebrows are present now.  and if she is anything like me, they are rather intense.

meaningful moments:  planning her room.  buying our first items.  reading baby books together.  feeling her move more.  calling her by name.  being on the other side of the half-way mark!

the countdown:  133 days to go!

current size: length of a carrot

20 weeks

banana = half way mark

cravings & such:  meat.  big, yummy burgers.  bun not necessary…we are all about the meat here, folks.  oh yes, and anything asian.  if i could eat teppanyaki or sushi every day, i would be pretty happy.  well, teppanyaki and a burger.

the bump:  getting bigger every day!  well, at least every week.  those little belly tendons are getting a workout. and speaking of workouts…the yoga folding is getting kinda awkward.  i guess i am pregnant and might need to adjust my poses a bit to accommodate a growing bump.

cool & cute things:  baby is swallowing more these days to practice using the digestive system.  which means the first bowel movement is in the works!  we will be seeing that meconium in a diaper very soon!  the baby is about 6.5 inches long, crown to rump and 10 inches from head to heel.  baby weighs in at 10.5 ounces.

new things:  we know the gender!  hurray for our baby girl!  girl, girl, girl!

meaningful moments:  seeing HER again during the ultrasound and taking home some cute pictures of tiny feet and a big belly.  finding out that we are having a little girl and sharing the news with family and friends.  calling her by name.  hearing that she is healthy and VERY active…and feeling that activity more and more.  so much fun.

the countdown:  140 days to go!

current size: length of a banana

19 weeks

cravings & such:  same ol’ same ol’

the bump:  here is a collection of bump shots that we took on thursday.  wahoo!  baby can be seen.

cool & cute things:  baby’s sensory development is exploding.  his/her [teeheehee!  it is pretty fun to know which one it is!]  baby’s brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch.  i guess those omega 3 with dha capsules are coming in pretty handy right about now.  some research suggests that baby might be able to hear my voice now.  so, if you hear me talking to myself, i’m not crazy, i am just chatting with baby.  baby weighs 9 ounces and measures 6 inches.  fyi…by the end of the month, baby will be almost 10 inches long!

new things:  hair on baby’s scalp is sprouting.  come on, full head of hair!

meaningful moments:  feeling real movement, getting to see our little peanut again [you are looking good, baby], and finding out the gender!  stay tuned…

the countdown:  147 days to go!

current size: a large heirloom tomato

18 weeks

cravings & such:  still…salads, sour things, and chocolate.  and i am loving carbs.  carbs, carbs, carbs.  it seems like that is all i want these days.  i felt a bit better about it after reading my pregnancy journal and learning that preggos need more carbs.  okay, then.  right on track.  although, i am trying to stick to the healthier side of the carb world.  things like fruit and oatmeal and whole grains…instead of downing bowl after bowl of mac and cheese [which i would love to do].

the bump:  growing.  i am slathering on the l’occitane shea butter.  stretch marks, be darned!

cool & cute things:  baby’s blood vessels are visible through thin skin and his/her ears are now in the final position.  a protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his/her nerves and s/he is busy flexing arms and legs.  the baby is about 5.5 inches long and weighs in at 7 ounces.  okay, i just want to point out that peanut has gained 2 whole ounces since last week.  hence, the shea butter.

new things:  baby’s reproductive organs are now in place and visible.  perfect timing for our ultrasound next week.  peanut pep talklittle one, this is your mama speaking.  on behalf of the entire family, i am officially giving you the green light to be brazen.  now is not the time to be shy and keep certain things private.  no leg crossing.  no dodging.  no awkward poses.  no sleeping in a curled up pose.  no strategically placed umbilical cord.  we are going to need you to give us a good clear shot at the goods.  thank you.

meaningful moments:  feeling a tiny tug on my tummy skin…that means you are in there and you are growing!  AND…perusing adorable baby merchandise.  so cute.  we are going to have so much fun with you!

the countdown:  154 days to go!

current size: a bell pepper

17 weeks

i know.  not the most attractive of veggies…don’t worry, i am pretty sure our little one is actually way cuter.

cravings & such:  still…salads.  the bigger and crisper, the better.  i am also really liking sour things and chocolate.  i am trying to keep from diving head first into bowls of candy because unfortunately, the salad consumption doesn’t really cancel out the sugar consumption.  darn.

the bump:  here it is!  peanut decided to pop out even more right around the time of my big work event last week…the one where i had to wear dress pants that cut right across my tummy.  yup, i am feeling it now.

cool & cute things:  the baby’s skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone and the umbilical cord is growing thicker and stronger…seems to me that peanut is preparing for some serious food absorption and growing in the coming months. the baby is about 5 inches long and weighs in at 5 ounces.  did anyone else notice that peanut has gained about 1.5 ounces since the last post? hmmm…that is a big percentage jump!  it is getting serious, folks.

new things:  baby can move his/her joints and sweat glands are developing [get ready baby, it gets hot here in the desert...]  as far as new things for mama…i am feeling some serious stretching.  that ligament growth is no joke!  but, no complaints, it just means that baby is growing as s/he should be.

meaningful moments:  feeling the baby bubbles more and more.  and planning our “reveal party”.  this is just too much fun!

the countdown:  161 days to go!

current size: a turnip
