this was a very nice weekend.  we have been so busy-busy that a couple days of down time sure felt good.  hubby and i did a lot of relaxing, movie-watching, and snacking.  we did have a laundry and ironing party on sunday evening so we weren’t complete bumps on a log.  here’s to a fresh week!

just me and my man + a double date night with my parents at mellow mushroom + so cool inside + we were seated in the psychedelic room + a perfect salad + an amazing pizza to share + our weekend couch companions.  some of the cutest little faces around + my beverage of choice: sparkling water with crushed ice and lots of lime + popcorn! + movie time.  an oldie but goodie.  you can’t go wrong with frank sinatra, bing crosby, grace kelly, and louis armstrong + consuming LOTS of cheese this weekend…cheese plate with fig and olive rainforest crisps with a side of marinated mozzarella + this fabulously sassy little face…coco is such a glamour-puss.

a very happy monday to you.  hubby and i had such a splendid weekend.  food-full, family-full, and fun-full.  practically perfect in every way.  and, all the laundry is not only washed, but folded and put away!  feels good.  starting off a new week on the right foot after a quite enjoyable weekend.  here are some snaps to prove it!

starting our weekend adventures together! + a late night run to in-n-out [just what hubby has been waiting for] + splitting a double-double and fries.  perfection + taking in a matinée of the avengers with rachel & nathan + happy faces + buttery and cheddar powder dusted popcorn + my very own bag + ben’s hands-off approach to popcorn consumption [hence the individual bags] + a dinner and dessert back at the whitehouse home + dad-in-law’s superb street tacos + colorful toppings + sunday morning grapefruit + car trip to church + post-church carb brunch of bagels…and a few sweet treats for my sweet hubby + dinner date night at home + steak and green beans with some brad mehldau mood music + coco’s sad little expression of longing as she attempts to share our meal + sorry miss monkey…no steak for you + a scrumptious dessert of fresh blackberries, the sweetest pineapple, and orange scented greek yogurt with a dusting of cinnamon.  a sweet close to a lovely weekend.

happy monday!  hubby and i feel mighty refreshed a ready to jump into a new week.  we spent the weekend enjoying some tasty grub, watching movies, hanging with family, puttering around the house [as my mom would say], and celebrating palm sunday as we prepare for holy week.  so many great moments together.

a friday date night at cb&cb + the crazy good menu chock full of cheesy deliciousness + a tall glass of icy water was in order to combat the increasing az heat + my prime dip…oh my + hubby’s o-lineman burger which consists of two patties smooshed together with cheese, sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches [yes, it is extreme, but it was a gastronomical experience that could not be turned down] + a peak inside the yumminess + a scrumptious breakfast smoothie that feels like such a splurge!  greek yogurt, coconut milk, protein powder, a few little squares of super dark chocolate, and plenty of cherries and blueberries.  so frosty and amazing! + the buddies watching my week with marilyn.  they too were quite enamored with miss monroe + our movie watching snack…sparkling ginger ale with prickly pear juice & freshly popped corn with a splash of butter and a sprinkling of white cheddar powder + our sunday morning drive to church for a palm sunday celebration.  we had a guest speaker who is a wheaton college prof and an oxford c.s. lewis scholar. [dream job] can you imagine steeping your mind in the deep waters of c.s. lewis for a living?  so cool.

this was a good one indeed.

the saturday evening post

this is actually a fairly accurate portrayal of the scene when ben and i arrive home with shopping sacks in tow.  those furry babies of ours always think we are bringing home the goods for them.  silly buddies.

this weekend, we got a lot of good stuff at the store.  today, i am busy preparing a hearty and festive steak and guinness stew in honor of st. paddy’s day.  it is going to be decadent.  and, there will plenty of leftovers so we can let the rich, cheesy, meaty goodness spill into next week!  yum.

lent update:  all i want right now is a big ice cream cone, preferably from jeni’s.  they just released a hummingbird cake flavor that is drool-worthy.  hang in there rachel.  are any of you giving up something for lent?  how is it going?

okay, on a non-sugar-deprivation note…i hope you all have some fun plans for the day.  hubby and i have been spending time with our families who are finally back in town from their travels.  and since the weather is going to turn cold tomorrow [come on, spring!  what's happening?] hubby and i will have to get a rain check on our outdoor sunshine by the pool plans in favor of a cozy day indoors with an old movie and some comfort food.  maybe even a big bowl of popcorn.

spice up your life

hubby and i like to cook at home.  yes, we do have fun on date nights on the weekend…but mostly, we enjoy creating meals from scratch in our own kitchen.  we plan out the week of recipes and then search the markets for interesting ingredients.  we have our staples, sure.  but we also like to try new things.  and we love flavor and spice.

in fact, we always add a dash [or two] of herbs and spices to every dish we make.  basil, chili powder, cumin, coriander, dill, fresh ginger, oregano, paprika, rosemary, sage, thyme, and tumeric.  whatever it takes to make the dish sing.

i guess my southwestern livin’ has been really inspiring me because lately, i have been loving all things spicy.  hubby and i have been consuming a lot of hatch chiles and peppers.  yum.  my personal favorites?

ben’s spicy pepper black beans with quinoa

a favorite snack – crave canyon’s [local company!] hatch chile and aged cheddar popcorn

fresh chile nachos with habanero salsa

vosages [sugar free!] chocolate with peppers and cinnamon

hubby’s homemade roasted pepper salsa

pita jungle’s chicken del sol with plenty of warmth and heat from cumin and peppers

hubby’s a.maze.ing. huevos rancheros with chorizo beans and smoky salsa

lush burger’s hatch chile burger with pepperjack cheese

eggs with chile and chipotle crumble [and cheese, of course]

take some time this weekend to get creative, enjoy some meals at home, and add some spice to your life.
