HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

planning ahead

calling all bloggers, writers, readers, creatives, mommies, inspired folks, and friends!  since october is in full swing and our little girl will be here before you can bat an eyelash, i am in full-on planning mode.  nesting, cleaning, organizing, scheduling, etc.

in an effort to not neglect my little ol’ blog, i would like to line up some guest posts to feature during the weeks following miss elinor’s arrival.  any takers?  i want it all!  fashion tips.  stories from your first days as a mom.  foodie bits.  craft ideas.  inspirational stories.  lovely images.  bring it on!  and since we are heading into the official season of thanks [and since i know that we will be bursting with grateful hearts around these parts], i would especially like to post some of your “top ten things i am thankful for” lists.

so,  if you have just been dying to be featured on swanky&dapperhere is your golden ticket.  [by the way, i fully understand that my humble blog is in no way comparable to the wonka factory...but you get the idea.]  aaaannd now that song is stuck in your head.  success!

come one, come all.

6 years

well, words are kind of inadequate when it comes to expressing the joy of our sixth anniversary together.  we took a trip to our wedding location, the royal palms, for a reminiscent stroll and an incredible dinner at t.cook’s.  it was pretty spectacular, as always.

sigh.

memorable baubles: my favorite gold bangles mixed with an anniversary gift from ben and my wedding day jewelry + happiness + the scenery and ambiance of royal palms, a perfectly inmate mediterranean oasis + the estrella salon, location of the reception + the fireplace that served as the altar for our wedding + a rose petal decorated menu + my handsome husband + the best pesto and bread i have ever had.  i never turn it down + our appetizer, chef lee’s carbonara: garlic cream, prosciutto, pancetta, parmesan cheese & egg yolk + my man’s dinner of duck l’orange served with candied orange, asparagus, thyme fondant potatoes & traditional sauce + my beef tenderloin served with horseradish gratin, demi glace, carrots, and roasted pearl onions + dessert!  [pay no attention to the "happy 5th anniversary" part...even the best places get it wrong sometimes] brown sugar butterscotch creme caramel: baked custard topped with salted dulce de leche, served with s’more macaroons

a day for remembrance

memorial day is a day we dedicate to the dead – to remember those who fell in defense of this country and the ideals which this country stands for. we may want, therefore, some drape of patriotism, some nod toward a higher motive more than mere circumstance, but not too much lest we trivialize the individual loss or somehow glorify the waste of youth and joy.

those who forfeited their lives, they chose, or were sometimes required, to live in a manner which brought them in harm’s way, and to that harm they fell.

our task is not to validate the sacrifice but to acknowledge it, to remember that it was made. we should do so, not out of guilt – what guilt should we own in surviving, in continuing as they laid down their lives to insure. but we should do it with humility – most of us have done nothing to earn that continuing. and if any validation is necessary, it is for we the living to prove that we are worthy of the sacrifice through dedication toward the peace that was purchased by these honored dead.

sleep, comrades, sleep and rest
on this field of the grounded arms,
where foes no more molest,
nor sentry’s shot alarms!

ye have slept on the ground before,
and started to your feet
at the cannon’s sudden roar,
or the drum’s redoubling beat.

but in this camp of death
no sound your slumber breaks;
here is no fevered breath,
no wound that bleeds and aches.

all is repose and peace,
untrampled lies the sod;
the shouts of battle cease,
it is the truce of God!

rest, comrades, rest and sleep!
the thoughts of men shall be
as sentinels to keep
your rest from danger free.

your silent tents of green
we deck with fragrant flowers
yours has the suffering been,
the memory shall be ours.
